Salmon Fly Rods

Salmon Fly Rods

Salmon Fly Rods

Choosing the “Best Salmon Fly Rods” for Salmon fly fishing is like picking out the best eating utensil. A different tool will be needed for different situations. These situations vary widely so there is a wide range of Salmon fly rods for Salmon fishing that will be better at times than others.

The size of fish is the biggest variable, but there are others that you will want to take into account before you invest in a freshwater or saltwater fly rod. What is difference between a Saltwater and Freshwater Fly Rod? Before you choose what will be the best saltwater fly rod for your adventures, it is good to know the differences between a saltwater and a freshwater (standard) fly rod.

First of all, both will work in either situation as long as it is designed for the size of fish you are after. One thing that is for sure is that you do not want to be under rodded ever, especially when saltwater fly fishing. Typically, pound for pound, saltwater fish fight much harder than freshwater fish. I have caught 2 pound saltwater fish that fought as hard as a 10 pound Rainbow Trout. So when in doubt, go with a heavier weight rod.

Salmon Fly RodsFast Action Salmon Fly Rods

Fast Action One critical factor when choosing a rod that will be best for saltwater is to makes sure it is a “Fast Action” rod. Basically this means that the fly rod will be quite stiff and will therefore deliver a lot of power. This will also mean a tired shoulder at the end of the day, but there are many reasons for fast action rods. Here are a few:

Wind: saltwater Salmon fly rods are built to combat the wind that is almost always prevalent when Salmon fishing in saltwater.

Distance: Fast action rods will deliver the most power to the line resulting in a further cast than with softer rods. Flies: In most saltwater Salmon fly fishing situations, you will not be casting small bugs to rising fish. Usually you will be casting heavy, wind catching bait fish imitations that are hard to cast. That is when a stiff, fast action rod will help you pick that fly up out of the water and then cast it out a long ways. With a soft rod, you will struggle to get it out of the water without stripping in a bunch of line, and then try to cast it!

Line: A common scenario when saltwater Salmon fishing is using sink tips to get the fly to the fish. Sinking line is much harder to cast than floating, therefore the fast action.

Salmon Fly RodsFreshwater or Saltwater Fast Action Salmon Fly Rods

You are probably thinking these aspects are what you would like in a freshwater rod. And yes, most saltwater rods make great freshwater rods for big fish. Unfortunately many freshwater rods are not designed for what you will be faced with in the saltwater. So if you are looking for a rod that will excel in both fresh and salt water, then stick with a fast action or one that is designed for saltwater.

The best saltwater fly rod is determined by the size of fish you are after. As mentioned earlier, saltwater fish tend to fight with a vengeance. Therefore it is wise to go with a heavier weight rod. For the most part, an 8wt (weight) is probably about as low as you will go.

Here is a generic list of some fish and the rod weight you will want to have:

8wt: Sierra Mackerel, Bonefish, Snook, Trout, and Steelhead

10wt: Bonefish, Permit, Roosterfish, Dorado, Snook, and Redfish, Salmon

12wt: Roosterfish, Dorado, Barracuda, Tuna, and Sailfish

14wt: Tarpon, Sailfish, Marlin, and Shark. In order for a rod to be the best saltwater fly rod, it must be good quality. Just as important though, it must fit into your budget.

As quality goes up, price is right in front of it. There are two things that I suggest for all rods when it comes to quality and price:

1. Go with the best salmon fly rods you can afford.

2. Stick with the  salmon fly rods that offer an unconditional lifetime warranty. For the most part, you will have to spend at least $200 to get a rod with a lifetime warranty, but trust me, it is worth it. We all break rods sooner than later, so you might as well make this an investment for a life time. Plus, you will regret buying anything less than the quality of rod that is warranted, especially when casting to and fighting fish in saltwater.

All the rod makers are very good with their warranties, and some even offer programs where you have a new rod in as little as a few days after a break. Salmon fly rods for Saltwater is a must have in your fly fishing rod inventory.

Stoneflies | Stoneflies Natural Imitations

April 29th, 2012

StonefliesStoneflies

Trout fishing flies are basically man-made, or stoneflies that is used in fly fishing. They are designed to mimic the fish’s natural food or prey and eventually attract it to strike at the hook. They are a perfect, if not the only substitute for natural bait like worms, the crustaceans, insects, and the smaller fish that this fish feed on.  If you are an amateur angler or are just want to get better results from your fishing expedition, you should visit your local fly shop to get yourself some trout fishing stoneflies. However, if you have little or no understanding of the fishes feeding habits and prey, you could easily be spending more time visiting these shops than casting your line. It will pay off big time to try and understand the actual types of insects or generally, prey that your fishing flies are trying to mimic (in their design).

 Stoneflies and Caddis Flies Stoneflies

Caddis flies for instance seek to mimic moths when they are fully grown. If this is what the fish are currently feeding on, you have a good chance of a strike. Stone flies also mimic bugs that these fish love to feed on. These types of fishing flies are ideal for early summer when the fish are hatching.  The size and visibility of stoneflies makes quite attractive to fish as they can be easily spotted. Mayflies on the other hand are a somewhat staple food for nearly all kinds of trout fish. They mimic bugs that are found mainly at the bottom of many water bodies like streams and rivers. As a result, stoneflies are popular with many experienced anglers because of the good, consistent results they yield.

 StonefliesStoneflies used as Attractors

Trout fishing flies will fall into two main broad categories; wet flies which are submerged and dry flies which float on the water surface.  The stoneflies and attractors are the most considerable type to choose from and are very fruitful. They tend to attract the trout’s attention quite easily as they have the most admirable color that trout fish love. They have nearly single-handedly facilitated the luring and capture of countless trout for countless of anglers. The stimulators tend to posses the shape of bugs. They are suitable in clear water as they have a dull color. When used appropriately, they can be used to great effect because trout fish love bugs. This is a great advantage. The use of stimulators and stoneflies is generally a great idea as it tends to reflect on the particular meal that most of the fish will be eating. These factors have made fishing flies an important asset in the angling game because they significantly increase your chances of catching the proverbial big fish.  Before choosing the right type of fishing flies, or the color of the stoneflies, there are important considerations that one is required to make. This includes the type of hook, the particular season in which one is fly fishing, the design of the fly (the bait which one intends to mimic), and of course the type of stoneflies for catching trout.

In the US there is countless number of rivers, lakes, shores, waterways. Anglers are offered great sport with an endless number of freshwater species of fish. But, most of the anglers prefer for trout fishing. So, you should have perfect knowledge about trout fishing and collect the all needed information of fly fishing as a fisherman and trout fishing equipment.  First of all you must have the basic idea of trout fishing. The diet of trout is highly diverged. Any types of small shoal fish, especially minnows and worms and grubs are food for trout. Insects are the main source of food for trout. They strike different types of artificial flies and nymphs. Trout can be catch bait, similar to simple worms or lures, artificially spun. Flies, complex hand tied and colorful form of insects can be used to catch trout. Most of the challenging and exciting anglers prefer to use flies for trophy trout fishing.

Trout Fishing EquipmentChoose the Best Trout Fishing Equipment and Enjoy Catching Trout

Fishing equipments are the most important part of fishing. The anglers always want to get the best equipment to catch fish. So, for trout fishing you must choose the best trout fishing equipment. These equipments are fishing rods, fishing reels, fishing tackles, fly rods, trout fishing gear etc.  Fly rods for fishing are made using various types of materials from carbon fiber of high technology to split cane of low technology. Rods of fiberglass are also very popular. If you are fishing in the lake then you must have longer rods around eleven feet. Wet fly anglers also prefer to use longer rods. But, the dry fly fishermen usually use shorter rods around 8 to 9 feet in length. If you are fishing in the shore then you must have 9 to 10 feet long rods with lightweight lines.

Rods and Reels Trout Fishing EquipmentTrout Fishing Equipment

The selection of reels does not depend on the place where you will catch fish rather it depends on the style of anglers. Some anglers like to play with the trout allowing it running with the line using their hand rather than by reels. Some choose shorter line and enjoy playing with trout. The features that the anglers look for are spring or disk drag, click drag of pawl, large arbors, anodized paint, ball bearings etc. There are some anglers who prefer for high quality of reels used in the past. Two popular reels are Beaudex and Pridex. These reels are very much affordable along with rim fly models.  The fly lines which are original are made from silk. Now a day lines are coming in various weights, types and styles. Some are weighted, some are floating. Weighted lines can sink quickly in the water whereas floating lines can sink slowly. Trout fishermen prefer plastic line as it is very simple to maintain. There are some fishermen who prefer for floating line of double taper as it is very much flexible and durablA

Trout Fishing EquipmentAsk fly shops for the best Trout Fishing Equipment

Trout fishing gear can be used to control the line and reel when catching and playing with big size of trout. If the line is properly fit with the fishing tackle then it will increase the chance of catching fishes successfully.
So, according to your fishing place and style, choose the best Trout Fishing Equipment and enjoy trout fishing in Colorado.

Fly Fishing – Learn Fly Fishing

April 25th, 2012

Fly Fishing Fly Fishing

If you want to learn fly fishing – then you need to do only a handful of things to make it happen. First, you’ll have to purchase a few basics – and I mean very few. The most important item is a fishing license. To find out the rules, regulations and fees for your state just search the internet for “your state” fishing license. You’ll get all the information you need. Mandatory item: The actual purchase of a license can be done at almost any fishing store, sports center or fly fishing establishment. Expect to spend about $31 if you live in Colorado. To find out about Colorado fishing license, search for Colorado Wildlife Fishing to get more information. Well, now… you’ve got a fishing license! Congratulations. Keep the shopping list simple: Now, it’s important to purchase the next few items TODAY and fish before you go to bed tonight. Trust me on this. Once you get your line in the water, you can call yourself an angler. The word angler comes from the shape of the hook (angle). You can also call yourself a fisherwoman, fisher person, fisherman, or just someone in love with fishing. Ok, this is going to sound corny but please keep on reading. My suggestion is to go to a fishing related store (check online too) and locate a Beginner’s Fly Fishing 101 for a Rod and Reel combination. These fly fishing basics should be less than $200 and will include the rod, reel, fly line and backing.

Fly Fishing Combination Packages

The combination packages are targeted for beginners and intermediate anglers who are new to the sport and don’t want to invest too much money too soon. Fly fishing equipment for a rod and reel package gives you the opportunity to try fly fishing and then determine what works for you without a huge upfront investment. The worst thing that could happen would be for someone to purchase a new fancy rod, reel and accessories then decide that fly fishing isn’t something you like to do. Be sure to purchase some flies and fingernail clippers. Put your line in the water: The next thing is to locate a nearby pond and get permission to fish. You see, you just want to start fly fishing… and with your new rod and reel combination you are ready to go. People fish for different reasons. Some enjoy the hunt. Other anglers love being on the riverbanks or in the water and tuning into the ebb and flow of the stream. And many people live for the bite, the tug, the taunt line and the catch on their fly fishing getaways. First thing to do is to catch a fish and then slowly purchase more of the accessories. Learn as you go what works and what you can do without. Remember to purchase the few items listed above and know that everything else is just there to make you look better. Once you catch a fish… and you enjoy what you’re doing then you can buy more. For now, just drop your line in the water and enjoy the moment.

Fly Fishing and Float Trips Fly Fishing

For the adventurer a raft put in on a warm morning in September without a cloud in sight. My expectations were not high, since a warm sunny day tends to put the fish down, at least on this stretch of the Colorado. When the fish aren’t rising, I go straight for tandem streamers; there is nothing more exciting than a big unhappy brown chasing your streamer off the bank in shallow fast moving water. Dredging the bottom with a nymph just doesn’t do it for me. If I break out a nymph’n rig, I must have exhausted all other options. The first quarter mile of water put a bleak outlook on the river ahead of us, not a single chase through some of the higher quality water on this stretch!! My invited guest on board no fly fishing basics throwing a heavy awkward tandem streamer rig, and were fairly discouraged after nearly throwing his shoulder out with only a handful of well-placed casts. I always talk of the exciting chases, but now; he must think I am full of it. I now know the frustration that guides must endure while watching miles of quality water go by without a single well placed or completely untouched. “There was probably a nice fish it that pocket we just passed”, came out of my mouth far too many times than I care to recall. About 3 miles into our float, which is exactly what it had become, a sightseeing float, and the weather began to change.

Fly FishingFly Fishing and the Wind

Here came the clouds, an encouraging sign, of course the wind comes with it and no fly fishing equipment or the self taught fly fishing basics help me with this wind. Here came the wind, and next thing you know, our beautiful sightseeing float turned into a back rowing battle to keep the boat heading downstream. Luckily, this did not last long, but the rain did begin to fall. Within a few minutes after the rain subsided, the mayflies were swarming and the fish were rising. Were eddied out in several prime spots and began to catch fish in the swirling foam. Just about any well-placed cast was rewarded. Time went by unnoticed, until suddenly I realize that we had only traveled half way to our take out and more than half of the day was gone. Pushing through the slack water and hammering the moving water with the streamers was now becoming very productive. Finally, I could prove to my guest how exciting the chase could be. It seems that every other cast produced an aggressive brown, either territorial or just plain hungry. We landed several nice fish while powering through the final stretch, arriving at last light. A turn in the weather sure can turn on the fly fishing and bring on the chase for those Colorado trout.

Colorado Fishing License – Wildlife Commission and Colorado Fishing License

April 25th, 2012

Colorado Fishing LicenseColorado Fishing License

Top-Notch Fly Fishing in the heart of the Rockies requires a Colorado Fishing License. There is little that can compare to the experience of hooking a cutthroat trout amidst the majestic peaks of the Colorado Rockies. Far more than simply catching a fish, many anglers feel an almost zen-like experience fly fishing the cold waters of the Roaring Fork Valley. Running north and south between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, the Roaring Fork Valley consists of four beautiful rivers: the Colorado, the Roaring Fork, the Frying Pan, and the Crystal. The Roaring Fork, from Aspen to the Upper Woody Creek Bridge, and from the confluence with the Crystal River north of Carbondale with the Colorado River, is Gold Medal Water for trout fishing, as designated by the Colorado Wildlife Commission. The river’s status does not exclude the average angler or family simply looking for a Colorado fishing vacation from fully enjoying the experience of fishing the valley.

Colorado Fishing LicenseColorado Fishing License Requirements

There are scores of guided fishing tours that require a Colorado Fishing License and many guide services offer rental equipment and lessons on fly-fishing, as the casting and retrieving process may be unfamiliar to the average angler.
